But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you.
2 Corinthians 4:7-12 ESV
The nature of most cancer treatments is that they knock you down before they build you up again. The hope is that the drugs will deal with the cancer while wiping you out. As horrible as these drugs are they are remarkable. Born out of years of research by many, really smart people. I’m very fortunate to be having my treatment at this time.
I’m in the “knocked down” phase right now. It’s necessary because this treatment involves transplanting back my blood which has gone away to be “supercharged” (as they describe it). This won’t work unless my current blood levels are really low. The new blood will fight the cancer and then slowly restore the rest of my body back to health.
Our bodies are incredible, while they may feel fragile at times, they have an in-built ability to heal themselves. I believe this is by design. God has created us this way. This is why I confidently give God the glory for my healing however and whenever it happens, because he made it that way!
A friend of mine recently gave me a gift of a mug. It simply says on it “I’m not done yet – God”. It puts a smile on my face every time I use it. It’s such a powerful statement. He’s in control, He wants the best for me and He knows when this is done. As it says in Philippians 1:6 “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”
When we go through difficult times it’s God’s surpassing power that is at work in us, that’s why He gets all the glory. It’s in our weaknesses that God’s power is most evident. But we reap the rewards of his glory. We are inheritors of his kingdom. Because of Jesus death we have new life. We are new creations. Not only that but are called children of God with every privilege that that entails.
We may feel fragile at times like jars of clay but we have a treasure within us that cannot be broken. We can have confidence that whatever outwardly we go through, God is at work in us, He has made a way and he’s not done yet!
